His Beatitude Archbishop Anastasios (Giannoulatos) of Tirana, Durres and all of Albania, after his studies and ordination, carried out missionary work in Africa. Postgraduate studies in religion and ethnology at the philosophical schools of Hamburg and Marburg in Germany, where he taught Modern Greek Language and Philology. Since 1976 he has been a full professor of History of Religions at the University of Athens. In 1981 he returned to Africa as Metropolitan of East Africa. In January 1991 he was appointed Patriarchal Exarch in Albania. Shortly afterwards, he was elected Archbishop of Albania. From this position he restored the Autocephalous Orthodox Church of Albania from the rubble, of communist rule.
